PROM 2011
Aloha All!
The year was 1973, in the previous century I'd like to point out, and I was junior at Edison High School in Huntington Beach, California. I was a surfer in my high school days, still am in fact, which meant I didn't participate in such things as school proms. We surfed, hung out at the beach and had nothing to do with normal high school activities like dances, sports and clubs, that was for Sporto's, Geeks, and Soches. And as such I never attended a Prom. And never had a real date either until after high school when I worked at a The Cannery Restaurant and discovered waitresses! Maybe one of the reasons I never had a date is I looked like this:
But when I look back at a photo in my old yearbook of what a Edison High prom looked like, I have no regrets for my choosing to be an outcast surfer:
Sure looks like a hell of a good time doesn't it? Junior Prom 1973 yahoo! Well a short time ago my daughter Kailana had her Junior Prom and I thought I might reflect on what if anything might look a bit different in the 38 years since the prom I did not attend occurred and hers did.
The first thing I noticed was that the boys looked much cooler than the high school juniors I remember walking between classes in 1973.
And then of course there are the girls, one of whom is my daughter Kailana. They look nothing like the girls I avoided so successfully in 1973. Hell, I was scared of the girls of my day who had big hair and too much makeup. I can't imagine how I would have reacted to a 16 year old girl that looked like these
And then there's the champagne and limo for their kids before the dance
Yes, things are much different now than they were 38 years ago. But 16 year old kids are still the same. Here in Kona my daughter was able to have a great night with here closest friends in a very classy event. All's I had to do was take some photos, others provided the rest. I'm happy for her, her friends and their parents. I am glad that I could provide some photo memories for all of them to keep.
Yeah, it ain't 1973 anymore...and thank god for that!
