HPA Football 2011

HPA Football 2011 Season Ends

The 2011 football season for HPA has ended and Luke has earned his varsity letter in football as a freshman. I can't tell you how proud of him I am. Luke has not been one of those boys who play all sports as they grow up and excel in being part of a team. He played one year of soccer in second grade and the refused to play again the next year. He came to me last spring as he was getting ready to tranYsition to high school and told me he wanted to try out for the football team. I must say that I was shocked, it was completely against his nature and yet here he was telling me he wanted to play football...he had never even seen a football game, had no idea of how the game was played and here he was on his own planning on trying out for a varsity football team. I was amazed to say the least.

HPA starts their football training with a football camp two weeks before the fall semester begins. For two weeks the wannabe Ka Makani football players sleep in the wrestling room, do football drills all day and watch football films and talk the games strategy at night. Prior to this endeavor Luke had not slept, ate and showered with a bunch of teenage boys. And yet he did it without any trouble. He completed camp and made the varsity team going on to play in half a dozen games for a few plays.

I was talked into doing the team photos for the football team since the company that did it last went under. I have never done sports photos before and it was a learning experience to say the least.

I don't know if Luke will continue on as a football player, but I cannot tell you how proud a father I am of his growing strength and maturity as a fine young man coming into his own.
