Powers Christmas 2011
Mele Kalikimaka from Kona Hawaii and the Powers family!
I have hated the plywood floor on my lanai since I moved in 18 years ago. My friend Edgar came over at my request so I could pick his brain on what might be the best way to rebuild the deck in preparation for installing Hawaiian Ohia posts to replace the 4x4 posts I have also always hated. Fiberon composite decking planks was what he suggested and I decided to go that way. I hired my son Luke and his best friend Josh to demo the old deck by ripping up the old plywood deck. It was eight hours of hard punishing work ripping up the old deck. It was the boys first experience working a full workday busting ass to finish a job. They were sore and exhausted at the end of the day, but they had a better appreciation of why you study hard and go to college so you don't have to break your body for forty hours a week working construction.
Christmas morning 2011 came to the Powers family as a beautiful sun filled sky falling down upon the azure sea down below our home. Each Christmas morning my three elves/kids put on a wonderful breakfast for our family and any others who may be without a place to be on the morning of Christ's birth.
This year once again our guest was my good friend and former judge George who has lived down the street and been my friend for twenty years.
We enjoyed a wonderful Christmas breakfast catching up on what has transpired in the last year in each our lives. Lukes fall as a HPA football lineman, Kailana's seƱor year events and Leilani's tales of her Junior year at college as well as her tales of her job at Kukio during this Christmas break.
It was a great morning filled with stories of past and present with my family and friend. The new lanai looks great and with a 25 year guaranty I'll be dead and gone before I have to do anything to it again!
Merry Christmas to you all!
Brian

Well, we managed to finish most of the deck on Christmas eve and Luke, Kailana and I waited till Leilani got home from her job working at Kukio to give in and open presents on Christmas Eve.

Hi Brian,
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed sharing your Christmas through your photos and blog! I especially like how the dogs are included as part of the family. Your new deck looks great!!!
Tobi
Nice one Brian, can't believe you set the task for Christmas Eve, but I guess it was your Christmas present to yourself, what the hell.
ReplyDeleteGood to get the kids involved, my son helped me build my deck many years ago as well so I can appreciate the effort.
Merry Christmas and best wishes for a prosperous New Year for you and the kids, see you soon.
Roger
Great looking deck! Man...your kids are all grown up and you are a super dad. Whatever happened to that under-age bartender working at the Cannery! Matt
