Over the weekend we worked together to plan what the pond would become. It had to be a couple feet deep, have a waterfall and big enough to hold a bunch of koi, was Lukes requirements. And so it began.
A spot below the lanai was chosen. An old hose was dragged out to outline the future pond, shovels and a pick arrived and construction began.
Living on the Big Island and owning property you become very familiar with rocks. Big rocks and lots of rocks. if you try to dig down more than four inches on any house lot in West Hawaii you will find yourself banging away at large rocks. And as such our new fishpond required digging, prying, lifting and water blasting many rocks out of our way.
Once the hole was finally dug it was time to build the waterfall structure and lay the underliner and plastic liner for the final pond.
Our back yard began to resemble a constrction baseyard as our little project began to grow beyond our first thoughts.
After the main pond and waterfall were underway Luke and I needed to head off to a lava flow to collect a bunch of nice black pahoehoe lava to ring the ponds edge.
Collecting peices of lava suitable for a pond installation requires much sweat. bloody fingers and sore muscles. Hence only the before and after photos. In between I am too busy sweating, bleeding and cursing to take photos!
Here you see the pond with the waterfall wall done in the background and lined pond in front.
It became necessary to figure out a way to have three seperate water flows coming into the pond. Here's me with my multifunction switcher used to change the flow of water into the pond.
Here you see the first filling of the final pond and on the same day I flew overhead coming home from a photoshoot and caught Luke standing on the stairs above the new pond.
These are some photos I took tonight just before sunset of the new Powers fish and waterfall pond. Drop by for a glass of wine or a beer and enjoy the sound of water rushing downhill!
Aloha and mahalo from Brian & Luke Powers...Pond Builders!
Wow!!!! That is totally amazing!!!! I really love what you have made. So, the black plastic will just stay they for the whole time? I like your idea of using lava rocks. It's really very creative of you to have thought of that.Great job for both of you! Wonderful teamwork too! :) - www.waterblast.pro
