Kapoho

Luke and I joined our friends the Varney's and two other families at a house in Kapoho, a small community on the far east point of the island of Hawaii, for a mini three day vacation.

Kapoho town was wiped out by a lava flow in 1960 after experiencing over 1000 small earthquakes shaking the area.

Many homes along the shore found their front yards subsiding into the sea. They built walls in the water along the boundries of where their property used to be and filled them in so that the bay is surrounded by black lava rock walls holding the sea back from their reclaimed yards.

There is clean warm water at your door step ready for diving, spearfishing, kayaking or just swimming about.

Many of the homes in the neighborhood have thermal ponds in their yards with crystal clear 90 degree brackish water ready to be swam in.

Here's my self portrait on the shore of Kapoho Bay

Luke, his buddy Conner and I took of for a day of exploring. We drove down a bunch of four wheel drive trails looking for something new to see. I took a couple of shots with my iPhone. Luke did all the driving from Kona to Waimea and on to Kapoho. He needs 50 hours for his drivers license and our trip allowed him to do his first driving in a vicious down pour on the Saddle Road, off road through Puna jeep trails and on to the foggy wet roads of the volcanoe.

We hiked about the Puna shore and headed off to the volcanoe to see if there was any lava flowing withing walking distance. It wasn't, but we had a good walk and drive along the Chain of Craters Road.

Back to Kapoho for a nap under the palm trees and then watch Luke drive home to Kona tomorrow.

Aloha,

              Brian
