Luke and I flew to Oahu and yesterday he signed into his dorm room at the University of Hawaii Manoa to begin his first semester of college. I had only my iPhone with me and almost forgot to take any photos as we were so busy. But I did manage to grab a few shots. Prior to shopping for dorm supplies we spent the morning walking around Waikiki with me telling him stories of my youth in this great place and how I had come here with a buddy when I was exactly the same age as Luke was now.
A Walmart run was next on the schedule to buy all the supplies he would need to outfit his bare dormroom for the upcoming semester.
Luke signed into his new living space and he and I hauled up all his supplies and began making his new home a livable place.
He's got a decent view of the mountains from his desk and just around the corner is a lanai with a great view of Daimond head beyond.
My son and I had a good time together talking, shopping and sharing the experience of his leaving home for the first time. I'm really proud of him and am sure he will do great on his own in college. I'm proud of all three of my kids, Leilani who graduated college two years ago and has begun her life in Oregon. Kailana who is in her final semester of college in Oregon as well and Luke who yesterday started his journey into adulthood and a new future.
Luke and I hugged as I left him in front of his dorm building, I told him to do good and walked away.
I had tears in my eyes as I drove towards the H1 Freeway and the airport. I'm glad I was there to share it with him, but it was bittersweet as I returned to now empty house for the first time in 25 years.
Aloha Luke, good luck to you my son...
Dad
