Front Lani Rebuild March 2022

Front Lanai Rebuild March 2022

We have seldom used the front door of our home. Through the garage, onto the back lanai and into the house has been the normal route for most everyone coming and leaving for decades. As such I had not really noticed the poor condition of several of the deck boards and hand rails on the front lanai.

And so I decided I'd spend a few hours one Saturday and remove the old boards and replace them with new ones. What I didn't know until I pried up the old ones was that the entire structure beneath them was consumed with dry rot and was in real danger of falling off the front of the house at anytime.

It dawned on me at this point that this was going to turn into much more than an afternoon spent painting and replacing a few boards. The whole damn thing was going to have to be turn out and rebuilt! And so it began.

Tearing out a porch that was screwed together well twenty years ago is a lesson in hammering, cutting, prying and swearing.

Once the demo was completed it's time to head off to Lowes to buy highly over priced lumber. Luke was here on a visit and helped me out with selecting, loading/unloading all the wood as well as getting it painted.

Slowly over a several week period I was able to not only replace the old lanai, but expanded into double its old size and build a cover over it.

Finally, yesterday afternoon I put in the last screw and the job was finished.

Not bad if I do say so myself!
